Styles

Staircase styles we build

Most of our stairs mix two or three of these. We help you pick the combination that suits the house, the budget and the inspector.

Open riser and floating stairs

Thick hardwood treads with the risers left open, so light carries through the stair. We coordinate the structure with your builder and handle every visible piece.

Cable railing

Horizontal stainless cable between hardwood posts, tensioned so a four inch sphere cannot pass, and built to hold that spacing for years.

Metal baluster railing

Slim black balusters under a hardwood rail, set plumb and evenly spaced, for a lighter look than a full wood balustrade.

Curved and winder stairs

Radius skirts, pie shaped treads and a handrail that follows the turn, with the rise kept consistent all the way around.

Switchback and multi landing stairs

Landings, returns and posts laid out so the rail lines up from floor to floor and every newel sits where it should.

Hardwood stair remodels

Carpet to hardwood, new treads and risers, scribed skirtboards and new railing on an existing stair. Smaller job? See stairs and railings.

The details

What separates a high-end stair from a good one

A staircase is the most visible carpentry in the house and the least forgiving. People walk it every day, and an uneven riser or a gap at the skirt shows up long after the paint is dry.

  • Risers within an eighth of an inch of each other, top to bottom
  • Skirtboards scribed to the treads, not gaps hidden with caulk
  • Mitered returns and nosings on every open side
  • Newels anchored to framing, so the rail never moves
  • Rail height and baluster spacing set to Massachusetts code
  • White oak, walnut, maple or treads matched to your floors

Process

From walkthrough to final inspection

Step 01

Free walkthrough

We measure the opening and total rise on site and talk through layout, wood species and railing.

Step 02

Fixed written price

You get a written estimate that lists every tread, post and rail, with one price that does not move.

Step 03

Built on site

Skirts first, then risers and treads fit one at a time, then newels and rail, with your floors protected.

Step 04

Final walk and inspection

We walk the stair with you and have it ready before the inspector sees it, so it passes the first time.

Questions

Custom staircase questions

How much does a custom staircase cost?

It depends on the number of treads, the wood species, the railing system and whether the stair is straight, switchback or curved. We price every stair after a free walkthrough and put one fixed number in writing.

How long does a staircase take to build?

It depends on the layout and the railing. A straight stair goes faster than a curved one with a continuous rail. The estimate tells you how many days we will be on site and when we can start.

Do you work with builders and architects?

Yes. Much of our stair work is in new custom homes, and we coordinate with the builder on framing, flooring and inspection dates so the stair goes in at the right point in the schedule.

Will cable railing pass inspection in Massachusetts?

Yes, when the posts are anchored to structure and the cable is tensioned so a four inch sphere cannot pass. We build it to hold that spacing over time, not just on inspection day.

Can you turn carpeted stairs into hardwood?

Yes. We remove the carpet, check the stringers and install new hardwood treads, risers and scribed skirtboards, and we can replace the railing at the same time.

What areas do you serve?

We build custom staircases throughout Worcester County, Massachusetts, from our base in Fitchburg. See the full service area.
